1990: The Little Mermaid won the Golden Globe award for Best Original Score – Motion Picture and the hit song “Under the Sea” won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song

“Under the Sea” is a song from Disney’s 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid, composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman and based in the song “The Beautiful Briny” from the 1971 film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It is influenced by the Calypso style of the Trinidad and Tobago. The song was performed in the film by Samuel E. Wright.

2006: High School Musical debuts and Breaks Disney Channel Records

It was on this day in 2006 that a national craze began when High School Musical debuted on the Disney Channel and scored big! Within the first few months, its various telecasts were seen by 36.5 million total unique viewers. The film spawned another Disney Channel sequel, followed by a third, which was released theatrically. High School Musical continued its success on video with multiple DVD versions, a Blu-ray version, a DVD game and a concert DVD.

High School Musical is a 2006 American television film and the first installment in the High School Musical trilogy. Upon its release on January 20, 2006, it became the most successful film that Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) ever produced, with a television sequel High School Musical 2 released in 2007 and the feature film High School Musical 3: Senior Year released to theaters in October 2008. It is the first Disney Channel Original Movie to have a theatrical sequel. The film’s soundtrack was the best-selling album in the United States for 2006.
